Note

He early engaged in the East India trade, owning vessels and becoming a merchant of considerable prominence in that line, -- though he began humbly, making his first voyage as supercargo when quite a young man. He established the firm of Crocker & Sturgis, whose headquarters were at Boston, and they continued in business until the panic of 1857, when the firm failed. Going to New York City, Mr. Crocker resumed business in much the same line, being senior member of the firm of Henry H. Crocker & Co., East India brokers, who had a long and successful career.
