Note

In 1898 he received from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine the honorary degree of Master of Arts for his services in the cause of education. He was for several years a member of the faculty of Wesleyan Academy, Wibraham MA and later, beginning in 1885, served twelve years as Superintendent of Public Schools in Dedham MA.

Like earlier generations of Crockers, five of his uncles having been shipmasters in either merchantmen or whalers, in his youth Henry followed the sea. One of his uncles, for whom he was named, was killed in an encounter with a whale. At the age of 16, Henry Crocker was captain of a barge on the Hudson River, and in 1865 served on a vessel chartered by government service in the South.

Subsequently Henry E. Crocker became a student in the Providence Conference Seminary at East Greenwich RI. Later he and his family moved to New York where he accepted a postition with textbook publishers Ginn & Company; Later they moved to New Jersey. While making his home in Haworth, Bergen County, NJ, Henry ran for and was elected mayor of the borough of Haworth NJ.
