Notes
Note
Annie Theresa Allen, a graduate of Dana Hall in Wellesley, MA, Bible Normal in Springfield HA, and Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley MA 1890, went out from Boston on 8-16-1890, to
parents in Harpoot. She spent her first winter in Van.
In 1903 she received full appointment fron the American
Missions and sailed from Boston on 8-8-1903, arriving Brousa
Sept, 1903. Annie remained in Turkey till 8-25-1909, returned to
America and stayed until 8-8-1912, then returned to Brousa
September of that year, remaining in Turkey until her death.
Throughout WW I Annie was tireless in her relief work among
refugees and other sufferers until conditions nade it necessary
for her and her aged father to go to Constantinople where he died
June 1918. After the war she refused her well-earned furlough,
but stayed on in charge of Near East Relief, first in Brousa
then in Angora where she was asked in 1921 to become the
representative of the work before the Komalist Government.
She travelled extensively and fearlessly in the interests of the
relief work; and few missionaries ever left such an impress on
the hearts and lives of such a variety of the inhabitants of Turkey.
She was all things to all men, and her soul was
apparently absolutely free from all thoughts of self.
During her travels she had a fall from a carriage on 1-18-1922
near Harpoot, which seriously affected here She became ill on the
way to Sivas where her trouble was diagnosed as typhus. Despite
the best of American care, she died 2-22-1922 and was buried with
military honors, representatives of all the official bodies and a
guard of honor accompanying the body to the grave. Persona grata
to the Turks, although they fully knew her sympathies with the
Armenians, she commanded the respect and adniration of officials
wherever she met them. Rear-Admiral Mark L Bristol, the herican
High commissioner, sent at her death an official cable to
Washington as follows:
RI camot pay too high a tribute to noble character ALLEN. During
three years I have marveled at courage and endurance she showed
in travelling all over Anatolia in all seasons of the year in
service to humanity. She was known throughout the country from
the highest official to the lowest peasant. She travelled without
fear because unknowing what fear was. Noble character ALLEN
recognized, honored, by all who knew her, was one rarely net in
this world. She was broadninded but strong in her convictionsj
fearless in doing right. It was a privilege to associate with her
because of her spirit and optimism born of ideals practically
applied. I feel deep personal loss, loss which is still greater
to Near East Relief, to her Missionary Society, and to American
interests. One best friend of all people of Asia Minor has passed
to the great beyond.
