Notes

Note

John Percival II descended from James Percival, first of the name in New England, who settled in Sandwich in 1670, and whose son John married Mary Bourne. John Percival II, within a month of the outbreak of the War of Independence, (Battles of Lexington & Concord, 4-19-1775), enlisted at Lenox MA 5-16-1775 as a private in Capt Goodrich's Company, Col John Paterson's Massachusetts Regiment. He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill (6-17-1775) and volunteered in the same company uner Col Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec, fought in the Battle of Quebec, and joined the retreat through Montreal, Crown Point and Ticonderoga to reach home in June 1776. He and Ruth Crocker probably married later that year or early in 1777.

In June 1777 John Percival II re-enlisted for six months in Capt Rowley's Company, Col Ashley's Massachusetts Regiment; he was a guard at the Battle of Saratoga 9-19-1777 and again at Saratoga when American troops defeated Burgoyne's invasion from Canada. Burgoyne surrendered his entire force of about 5,000 men 10-17-1777, the first major American Victory in the Revolutionary War. John remained at Lee MA until 1798 when he moved to Sherburne, Chenagngo Cty, NY; he purchased land in 1799 in the part of that town which split in the early 1800s and became Smyrna. He was one of the first deacons of the newly organized (1824) First Congregational Church of Smyrna NY.
