Note

Rev Herbert Marsena Allen, a graduate of Williams College, North Adams MA, decided to pursue journalism in America, but went out to visit his parents in Van and Harpoot; he also travelled into Kurdistan with Rev Dr Janes L Barton of Harpoot. As a result Herbert became convinced his nost promising field of usefulness lay in Asia Minor. He returned to America, graduated from Bangor Seminary in 1890, and was ordained, Two days later he married Ellen R Ladd who had already been a missionary in Van for three years. They went out to Van where Herbert, acquainted from boyhood with the Armenian language and with the thoughts, customs, and needs of the people, began his work immediately. He sympathized deeply with the Armenians as a race and with their sufferings and aspirations. He secured to a remarkable degree the confidence and friendship of the people. As principal of the Boys' School at Van, and in his preaching and touring in city and village, he had great influence and was very useful. After the massacres of 1896, he was sent to Persia by a relief committee to purchase oxen for the surviving peasants; through this aid and the seed given them, they were able to escape starvation. In 1898 family conditions led then to return to America where he resigned his comection the Board of Missions and was for a while engaged in Cuban relief, later taking charge, under the Massachusetts Hone Missionary Society, of the religious work anong the Armenians. He published with nuch success the Armenian paper "Gotchnag," which was later removed to New York and enlarged. In 1903 he accepted the invitation to return to Turkey to becone the editor of the Avedapar; at the sane tine he took over the principalship of the Bithynia High School at Bardizag for two years in the absence of Dr Robert Chanbers. In 1905 he went to Constantinople, and after naking a prelininary trip through the country to get in touch vith the constituency, he took charge in 1907 of the krnenian He nade a great success of this and subscribers rapidly increased. in 1910 Herbert also undertook to publish a small sheet in English, Bosphorus News, and later The Orient to keep English-reading friends in touch with the progress of mission Turkey. An able vriter with rare gifts as a preacher, always ready to work up to and beyond the limits of his The Board of Missions stated they have had no missionary core thorough acquaintance with Armenian history or with love for the people. He was suddenly struck down with pneunonia- and died 1-25-1911. His widow and six children returned shortly thereafter to America. At his funeral in Pera, besides and English speakers, the vicar of the Gregorian Patriarch an address, the first tine any Gregorian clergyman had stood in Protestant pulpite At the memorial service in Van an Arnenian Bishop also made a eulogy, and the Armenian Bishop of Ankara wrote the Avedaper of what Herbert Allen had done for his people
