Notes
Note: 1
"began manufacture of salt on Common Fields, Barnstable, in 1804."
Note: 2
"The geatest advance in salt-making came with Loring Crocker's Common Fields Salt Works at Barnstable. Crocker built a water reservoir which automatically fed the various vats. Three of the seven vats he called the first, second, and third water rooms. The next three were the pickle rooms, and the last, the salt room. Epsom salts and Glauber Salts were both by-products of the process. Prices per bushel went as high as 82 cents, and at one time the sum of two million dollars was invested in the Cape Cod salt works. Outside competition, unfortunately for the Cape's industry, ruined the trade, and one by one the salt works were given up and their lumber sold for building purposes elsewhere."
