Othniel Brainard Junr. was born on 19 Sep 1755 at the Chatham, Middlesex County, Connecticut (CT) farm home of his parents. His father, Othniel was age 27 and his mother, Lucy Swaddle, was 26. She was a daughter of John Swaddle and Susanna Whitmore of Middletown, Middlesex, CT.

Othniel Junr married Grace Stocking (1763-1831) on 25 Jul 1782 in Middlesex County, before his 27th birthday. She was a daughter of Benjamin Stocking and Phebe Washburn of Chatham, Middlesex, CT. Together, Grace and Othniel had 1 surviving son, Buckley Brainard (1782-1857).

The name: Othniel Brainard was listed upon a muster roll dated 2 Jun 1778 at Valley Forge as a Corporal in Captain Ebenezer Perkins’ Company, 1st CT Rgt., commanded by Major David F. Sill, attached to the 2nd CT Bgde., composed of the 1st, 2nd, 5th & 7th CT Rgts, commanded by BrigGen Jebediah Huntington. Archives Records Administration (NARA) WDC, Catalog ID: 300022, record group: 15, roll: 0327, state: CT, veteran name: Othniel Brainard.

Wilder S. Metcalf, Commissioner for the RevWar Records Section, Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions wrote a typed letter dated 11 Jun 1925 to an individual residing at Fort Wayne, Indiana (IN) stating, that a review of Othniel Brainard’s pension claim S.44683 reflected also, he was a Sergeant in Captain Ezra Selden’s Company, Col Samuel B. Webb’s (1st) CT Rgt., at the battles of Sag Harbor (24 May 1777) at Suffolk County, Long Island, New York (NY), Monmouth (28 Jun 1778) and New Brunswick, New Jersey after Monmouth. He was discharged in June 1783.

His pension application was approved on 25 Apr 1818, while a resident of Lenox, Madison County, NY, age 62. Two years later, Brainard referred to his wife, as age 58 however, her name was not furnished. During a communication sent by Brainard to the Commissioner of the Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions in 1925, he referred to his wife as Grace. They had one child, Buckley, a son who was residing in Lenox, NY during 1825. Buckley Brainard was recorded within the Bureau of Pensions as survived by a son, Philo.

Commissioner Metcalf advised in the above letter that *Othniel Brainard was the only soldier with that name found recorded within Revolutionary War service records of the Bureau.
