Note
At three years of age he was a town pauper, being sold each year to the highest bidder; thus he grew up faring badly, receiving no education. In 1839 he came to Benjamin Pettingell, of Salisbury, and prospered so that eventually he purchased the latter's farm and in time owned eight hundred acres, one hundred of which were under cultivation, and a saw mill whose output was five hundred thousand feet annually.
