He served in Capt. Aaron Smith's co.. Col. Gill's regt., Aug. 15 to Nov. 29, 1777 was a "bombadier," drafted from Gen. Warren's brigade. He kept a diaiy, which is at the U. S. Pension office; mentions brothers William and Obadiah. A confirmation of this military history is found in the fact that the widow, Elizabeth, married a second husband, Jeremiah Dillingham, at Auburn, Me., and had a daughter Louisa, born in 1803; in 1846 Louisa and Arminta Pettingell were "the only heirs of John Pettingell, who was in Capt. Aaron Smith's co.," etc.
