French and Indian War: Made Corporal of the Second Company of Taunton on April 6, 1757 and later the Captain of it. He was on the reserve list for Revolutionary service December 6, 1776, but probably saw no active service. However in 1775, 1776, 1777 and 1778 he was elected a member of the Taunton Committee of Correspondence, Inspection and Safety whose many duties included the care of confiscated estates and a general lookout for Tories.
