Military Service
Description | Military Service of Crocker, Eleazer III |
Notes
Note
Served during the Revolution at the battles of Bunker Hill, Concord, Lexington, and Saratoga; he was at New York when the British evacuated that city. He was a sentry at the foot of Bunker Hill the night the earthworks were being built. In the morning upon discovery of the works, the bombardment began; the British fired over his head. When New York City was captured by the British, Eleazer and a companion, both sick with fever, were hidden by friends in a "meat box" until after dark, then taken in a small boat to the New Jersey shore. His companion died before they reached safety. In NJ a Dutchman cared for Eleazer.
